About Dambulla
The Royal Rock Temple of Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Rising 160 meters above the surrounding plains, the caves have served as a Buddhist monastery since the 1st century BC, when King Valagamba took refuge here from South Indian invaders. Five separate caverns house magnificent rock paintings and statues depicting the life of Lord Buddha.
